Netherlands Create Animal Police Officers to Act Against Animal Cruelty

Jul 28, 2014 by

Dutch government says the country’s first animal police officers are training to enforce laws protecting pets, livestock and wildlife against abuse

In 2011, the first animal police service, (animal cops) started work to tackle cruelty to animals and animal neglect more effectively. There is also a special alarm number 144, for reporting animals in distress.

The Dutch government says the country’s first animal police officers are training to enforce laws protecting pets, livestock and wildlife against abuse. The officers are drawn from the regular police force, and 125 of them will receive several months of training on animal welfare legislation and how to enforce it.

The Netherlands is the first country to have an animal rights party in parliament.

Dutch police to act against animal cruelty

The animal cops take action against:

• animal cruelty and the killing of animals;
• animal neglect;
• sex with animals;
• animal pornography;
• poaching;
• Animal baiting.

500 animal police officers by 2015

By 2015, the Dutch police will have 500 specialist animal police officers. These officers also carry out other police tasks, but receive specialist training at the Police College.

Training for animal police officers

The animal police officers training course covers:

• legislation on animal cruelty;
• recognizing suffering in animals;
• the powers of animal police officers;
• confiscation of animals;
• Procedures for reporting animal cruelty (such as drawing up an official report).

The training course combines theory and practice. It takes a total of 12 days, spread over three to four months. Six of those days are devoted to theory, and the other six to practical training. Trainees may for instance visit scenes where animal cruelty has been reported. At the end of the training course, the officers sit an examination, and if successful, they can start work as animal police officers.

Phone 144 to report animals in distress

An emergency number, 144, has been launched for reporting animals in distress. Calls to 144 (‘Save an Animal’) are answered by staff of the Dutch Police Services Agency’s emergency control centre.

    • Great news, thank you, however it makes me wonder how things are moving forward here in the Balearics (Spain); I presented (amount other things) to set up an emergency line “115” for animals 2010… and they (COVIB-Association for veterinarians) informed me that they liked the idea and was going to work on it, and here I am more than 4 years later still waiting for news (I was told not long ago that they are still working on it)… a bit too slow for my liking, anyhow well done to the Dutch and cross your fingers that we also get ours up and running soon!! Anyone who wants to get to know about my work for the pets in the Balearics  Warm Regards to everyone, Christina

    • Hanneke

      We do not have dogbrothels in the Netherlands. Thank God for that.
      I believe dogbrothels are legal in Denmark, but absolutely not in the Netherlands.

    Excelente iniciativa.

  17. Manuela Cornel

    This is wonderful, all countries should follow. Thank you

  18. Tano

    I bet they don’t equally care about cows, pigs, chickens and other animals in the food industry process. http://www.peta.org.uk/issues/animals-are-not-ours-to-eat/meat/

  19. Dwinna Barker

    Thank you so much, The Netherlands, for being a grand example and leading the way!!!! I so hope you can rub off on American and the rest of the world very, very soon!!!!

  20. Ivana

    I am in Love with this Country!!!!

  21. I agree with the comment by Tano. People who are truly concerned about animals should go vegan. (I mostly choose vegan foods do not have to involve killing the plant). I would also add that it is necessary to stop the destruction of natural habitats that are home to native animals (and plants) – Australia and North America are terrible examples of that.

  22. Janice Wilson

    Bravo! Kudos! Congratulations! This sounds like a wonderful program. Hopefully your courage and foresight will spread throughout the world. No one wants to be the first regarding these important, but controversial issues, but you have done it and your efforts, integrity and moral compassion for all living beings is to be applauded. Hopefully you will have shamed other countries into following suit. Hooray!!!!! (PAY ATTENTION NEW YORK AND THE USA AS A WHOLE!)

  23. Hassan Khan

    Certainly this leading role would pave the way for the rest. Thank you

FELICITACIONES!

    This is wonderful news! Please, does anyone have information on what happened to the scums involved in the pony torture video? I want to know their punishment. I couldn’t watch the video after about 30 seconds, it was just too heartbreaking. I am hoping she was given the same treatment as that poor little creature!

  38. Robert

    Well done Netherlands for your forward thinking and initiative in introducing your animal police squad.

    I wish we had something similar here in England and Wales.
    Alas it will never happen because our useless Tory government has been busily reducing the funding to our wildlife police patrols since 2010.

    We can but dream!
